Handmade, High-Quality Solid Wood Cutting Boards – Made in the USA
Treeboard’s founder, Will Mauldin, fell in love with trees and woodworking in early childhood.
For years, he worked as a journalist, primarily at The Wall Street Journal in Washington and Moscow. However, after a family tragedy in 2019, Will found solace in nature and began working with an already-fallen oak tree near his family’s home in Maryland. What started as a hobby quickly turned into a passion and a side business.
He discovered that natural, solid slabs of hardwood could be transformed into stunning coffee tables, cutting boards, and other handcrafted products—with minimal intervention from humans or machinery. This philosophy led to the creation of Treeboard, a company dedicated to pure, natural woodcraft. Unlike mass-produced alternatives made from particle board, plywood, or laminated strips—often held together with glue and petroleum-based products—Treeboard focuses on authentic, solid wood.
Will lives by this philosophy: “Living things can continue to give, even after they are gone.”
Since its founding, Treeboard has been committed to crafting high-quality wooden products for kitchens and homes while supporting the preservation of North American forests. In 2024, Will left journalism to pursue Treeboard and his other passions full-time.
Treeboard's main woodworker, Alberto, is originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, but moved to Maryland, where he pursued his education and later became a master carpenter. Known for his precision and problem-solving skills, he’s the go-to expert on project sites across Washington, Maryland, and Virginia—trusted to tackle complex challenges and craft stunning pieces from both hardwood and softwood.
Outside of work, Alberto has a passion for creating consumer goods. One of his proudest personal projects is a handcrafted cherry cutting board, which he brought to his job interview at Treeboard—a perfect example of his dedication to craftsmanship and quality.

Hard Maple vs. White Oak: Which is the Better Wood?
It ultimately comes down to personal preference, as both are among the most durable North American hardwoods for cutting boards.
Maple has a lighter color and finer pores, giving it a smooth, clean look. White oak (unlike red oak) features a naturally sealed, rot-resistant grain that is coarser and darker in hue. While oak may be slightly more durable and less prone to staining, all properly treated boards resist stains—and any stains that do occur can be removed.
